KOREAN car maker SsangYong has revealed the much-needed new C200 model that will be on sale within a year as a rival for the successful Nissan Qashqai.

Smaller than any current SsangYong, it will be referred to as a compact urban cruiser, being a crossover between a car and a 4x4.

Revealed in production-ready guise for the first time at the Korean Motor Show in Seoul, it is also being displayed in C200 Eco form with diesel hybrid power.

There is also an estate version with a choice of a high-torque 2.0-litre diesel or turbocharged 1.8-litre petrol engines.

SsangYong says it expects class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions reduced by 50 per cent in the Eco. The show cars have a six-speed automatic transmission but manual versions will also be available.

Styled by Giugiaro's ItalDesign in Italy, the C200 has a 2.65metre wheelbase with an overall length of 4.4metres.

SsangYong says that at this stage there is no indication of UK prices and that the next step will be for it to undergo EuroNCAP crash testing before coming to the UK.
